What’s a First Look (And Why Should You Plan One)?

“Do you want to do a first look?”

Brides get this question in first meetings with their photographer all the time, often catching them off guard and causing them to give an answer without much thought. But I want to break down for you what a first look really is and the wonders it can work for your wedding day.

Sure, some brides prefer to save that magical reveal to their groom for the trip down the aisle, but I promise you that a first look can be just as meaningful…maybe even more so!

Whats A First Look

SO WHAT’S A FIRST LOOK?

Simply put, a first look is a chance for you and your future spouse to see each other before the wedding ceremony.

So, once all your makeup is applied, all your curls are pinned, and you’ve stepped into the gown of your dreams, you can take the time before the “I do”s (and away from guests’ eyes) to be with the love of your life.

SOUNDS GREAT…BUT WHY SHOULD I DO IT?

Remember, first looks aren’t for everyone, but I’ve had the opportunity to watch some incredible moments unfold that would not have otherwise taken place on a wedding day. So these are the top three reasons why I’d definitely recommend at least considering a first look:

A quiet moment alone

Before the festivities begin and the whirlwind of the wedding day carries you away, a first look gives you a chance to be alone with the person of your dreams. Especially if your ceremony has no place for personalized vows (or if you are bashful and would prefer to do it without anyone watching) this is a great opportunity to read sweet letters to each other or share private vows. And it is entirely up to you whether or not you have a camera around while you do it!

A chance to actually attend your cocktail hour

If you do choose to have your first look photographed, that means we can go ahead and take all the bridal portraits before the big day really kicks into gear. We can also fit in pictures with the entire wedding party, and even family photos. Not only does that mean your photos will be taken while your hair and makeup are at their freshest, it also means you’ll get to arrive with your guests to the cocktail hour and enjoy the snacks and drinks you so carefully selected! This allows for more time with your guests, more time to enjoy your reception venue and more time to spend the evening celebrating instead of standing in front of a camera.

An opportunity to calm your nerves

If you’re anything like me, nothing calms your nerves more than a big bear hug and a reassuring word from the one I love. Wedding days can be overwhelming, and I’ve found that brides who opt for first looks go into the ceremony filled with peace and joy rather than frantic energy. So, if you feel that the best day of your life will be made even better by starting it with your spouse to be, schedule in that first look!

Now that you know what a first look is and why they are so great, are you ready to plan one? Even if your answer is, “No, thanks, I want to wait for the big reveal during the ceremony,” you might still want to consider a first look…just a different kind. Many brides plan first looks with their mom, dad, both parents, bridesmaids or other important people in their lives. The reactions are always priceless and brides love them to pieces.

A first look is a great chance to get creative, do something a little outside the box and prepare for a wedding day with the people you love most. So, let’s start planning yours!
