It was a perfectly common high school rite of passage in my Florida hometown, and all my friends and I anxiously awaited the results. 

No, I’m not talking about the SATs or college admissions letters, though, admittedly, those events are far more important. But for me, the outcome of my senior portrait session radically affected my life in ways I never would have imagined. 

As I flipped through the gallery of photos meant to celebrate me in all my triumphant graduate glory…all I could think was, “who is this girl?” The airbrushed face smiling back at me felt like a hollow reflection of who I was. My skin looked dull, my eyes looked lifeless and even the familiar scar on my cheek was retouched away. If you’d asked me before that moment if I loved my scar, I probably would have laughed, but in that moment, it felt like a part of me had been erased. 

I loved who I was, flaws and all. I wanted to look at my portraits and see myself reflected back at me. Years later, this desire to celebrate glorious authenticity and vibrant reality drove me to pick up a camera and become a photographer myself.

Today, I have the privilege of capturing the most love-filled moments Ohio has to offer and celebrating them in all their authentic, heartwarming glory! Since moving from the land of perpetual summer to a state of fall leaves and snow, I’ve been more inspired than ever by the colors of nature.
