What to Wear for Your Engagement Photos

When booking an engagement session it’s all peachy until you think “What do I wear?” The dread starts to sink in. “What if I wear the wrong thing?” “What if my spouse wears the wrong thing?” These questions can eat at you to the point where you’re not even excited about your session anymore. Well I’m about to ease your mind and help you choose what to wear for your engagement photography session.

Look at your photographer’s portfolio

You should absolutely LOVE the work of the photographer you chose for your couples or engagement portraits. Look through your photographer’s portfolio to get an idea for the color theme they gravitate towards. For example, I usually have sessions outside in nature, inside greenhouses, or around brick buildings. For my style, dark and/or neutral colors work best in those locations and with the way I edit.

Your photographer shouldn’t just take your money and disappear until your session. The photographer you choose should act as your guide and want to give you the best possible experience and photos imaginable. You should feel comfortable asking your photographer for outfit advice and guidance. For example, after I book sessions I send clients a style guide that provides them with inspiration on what to wear and outlines what not to wear. It covers colors, fit, patterns, and how to coordinate if more than one person is being photographed. To make sure your photographer has your needs as a priority be sure to ask about what guidance they provide when inquiring.

Look in your closet and your future spouse’s closet

You want to pick out items from both of your closets that are flattering and comfortable. Next you want to coordinate colors. The colors don’t need to match exactly, they should just compliment each other. If one of your is wearing burgundy the other person can wear navy, black, emerald, or even white and it will look great on camera. For my clients I try to encourage them to look deep within their closets. If I can save you money by not having to go shopping then I will.

Bring multiple options

Even if you book a session where you only get to wear one outfit, bring more options. Let the photographer style you with your clothes to compliment the environment and their editing style.

More tips

Make sure your nails are either freshly manicured or clean. Especially if it’s an engagement session, your hands will be in a lot of the photos. Communicate openly with your photographer. They want you to be as happy as possible. If you’re happy, we’re happy.
